Holi, the festival of colours, has arrived. It is one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated by Indians all over the world. Choti Holi, also known as Holika Dahan, celebrates the victory of good over evil. People all over the country celebrate this occasion with great enthusiasm. This year Choti Holi or Holika Dahan is on Thursday 17th March from 9:06 pm to 10:16 pm, and Holi is on Friday 18th March as per the Drik Panchang. To celebrate Choti Holi, people gather around a bonfire to perform Holika Dahan rituals. This tradition is associated with Hiranyakashipu’s son Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu and his demonic aunt Holika. This festival is celebrated as the killing of Holika by Vishnu to save Prahlad.
Significance And Importance On Holi
Holika Dahan, also known as Choti Holi, marks the death of Holika and the victory of Prahlad, who went out of the fire without a scratch. According to legend, Holika was blessed with a boon that saved her from burning. To kill Prahlad, she sat with him in Holika on his lap, but to everyone’s surprise, she was burnt alive and Prahlad was not hurt. Like every other festival, Holi also celebrates the victory of good over evil. Hence, Hindus celebrate Holika Dahan as a festival.
The festivities begin the night before the main Holi with Holika Dahan where people gather to perform religious rituals and also burn an effigy of Holika, sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, as a sign of victory of good over evil. The first day is often referred to as Choti Holi and the next morning is celebrated as Rangwali Holi, where everyone gathers and plays with colours.
