Russia Ukraine News: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Russia, which launched a military operation against Ukraine last week, would be facing “a real danger” if Kiev obtained nuclear weapons.
According to RIA news agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that a third world war would involve nuclear weapons and be destructive. The Russian foreign minister said last week that Kiev would face a “real danger” if it acquired nuclear weapons. Last week, Russia declared a “special military operation” against Ukraine.
After launching its invasion of Ukraine a week ago, Russia announced on Wednesday that its forces have taken control of Kherson, in the south, as fighting raged throughout the country and Western nations tightened an economic noose around Ukraine. Since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of his southern neighbor nearly a week ago, more than half a million Ukrainians have fled the fighting.
Russian bombings of Ukraine’s cities continued, with videos posted on social media showing heavily damaged buildings around Kharkiv’s second city. “While he may make gains on the battlefield, he will pay a continuing high price over the long run,” U.S. President Joe Biden said at his State of the Union address. Straying from the prepared text, Biden added “He has no idea what’s coming.” He did not elaborate.
As Russian troops have rolled north of the Ukrainian capital, Ukrainian forces have resisted their advances fiercely. A long convoy of Russian soldiers north of the capital has not advanced toward the capital.
According to Zelenskiy, more than 6,000 Russians have died in the first six days of Moscow’s invasion, and the Kremlin will not be able to take his country with bombs and air strikes.
Biden further intensified sanctions on Moscow, joining the European Union and Canada to ban Russian planes from US airspace. He also said the Justice Department wants to seize yachts, luxury apartments and private jets belonging to wealthy Russians who have links with Putin.
