Ever since the trailer launch, the film has become a topic of discussion among the audience, especially those who were affected during the mass exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s. This mass migration took place in February-March 1990 and within a few weeks lakhs of Hindus were displaced from the state. The sense of security of the community was shaken after the killings in the area. Now, more than three decades later, the ‘real story’ of this migration has been featured in The Kashmir Files.
Many social media users expressed their opinion as soon as the film was released. Mainstream Bollywood is known to stay away from sensitive and political matters and the Kashmir issue has never been addressed directly. As soon as The Kashmir Files released, netizens wanted people to watch the entire incident through the film.
One social media user wrote, “This is film of 130 Cr Indians now (sic),” another one commented, “Not a movie but true story ,my story ,your story,story of what every Hindu has 2 endure all thanks 2 Secularism. As a Hindu in general & a Kashmiri Pandit I own this movie .A humble request to all to please watch #TheKashmiriFiles as it releases in theatres today (sic).”
According to Box Office India, The Kashmir Files is going to challenge Prabhas and Pooja Hegde starrer Radhe Shyam in multiplexes of Hindi belt and may even surpass its collections. Shikara, the 2020 release directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, also dealt with the insurgency in Kashmir and the mass exodus of Hindus in the 1990s.
Vivek Agnihotri, the director of The Kashmir Files, also alleges that he and the cast were not invited on The Kapil Sharma Show to promote the film, something Kapil Sharma denied on Twitter.
