The Maharashtra Schools are set to reopen on Monday, putting an end to all the rumours and speculations. A cabinet meeting today approved the reopening of schools across Maharashtra by Maharashtra Chief Minister Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The CM reviewed the current situation in the state regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and also heard from several stakeholders in the meeting. As a result, the Maharashtra Cabinet has decided to allow schools to reopen on Monday, 24th January, and for offline classes to resume beginning Monday, 25th January.

Minister of School Education Varsha Gaikwad confirms decision

Varsha Gaikwad, the School Education Minister, formally announced the decision in a press conference following the State Cabinet meeting at which the decision was taken to allow the reopening of schools. Ms Gaikwad told the press conference that students would be able to return to schools on Monday, 24th January 2022.

Tweet by ANI, “From 24 (January) we will be reopening schools for classes 1-12th with COVID protocols; CM has agreed to our proposal: Varsha Gaikwad, Maharashtra School Education Minister”

“We have also decided to open pre-primary schools (from January 24): Varsha Gaikwad, Maharashtra School Education Minister”

Prof. Varsha Eknath Gaikwad said on Twitter, “Schools in areas where coronavirus cases are fewer can restart physical classes for Std 1st-12th and also start pre-primary classes from January 24 onwards. We are committed to safe resumption of schools in the state.”

Reopening of Maharashtra Schools

School reopenings are permitted by the state government starting on 24th January 2022 for all grades, but it is up to the local or district authorities to make the final decision. School reopening will be supervised by district level authorities who will assess the ground situation prevailing in the district and permit school reopening accordingly. Thus, district authorities like BMC (Bombay Municipal Corporation) will be the ones to decide what schools to reopen and close in their districts.

Maharashtra Reopens Schools In Wake Of Covid-19

The Maharashtra Government reopened schools as soon as this decision was made, even though the third wave of COVID-19 remains a substantial concern. Several stakeholders, among them students groups and politicians, seem to have contributed to the state government’s decision in part. Maharashtra’s CM, in several letters of appeal, had pointed out that the closing of schools had resulted in massive educational losses for students. Following this, it appears that the state government has reconsidered its earlier decision to keep schools closed until 15th February.
